Hello... or no hello?

hel·lo/həˈlō/

Exclamation:
Used as a greeting: "hello there, Katie!".
 Noun:
An utterance of “hello”; a greeting.

Hello, is a relatively simple term, one which I don't come close to thinking twice about when I use. There really is no inappropriate time , I once thought. But now I think back and there's a long list of
times in which I would not use the word, for example:

-During a lecture
-While watching a Sex-Ed video
-As I am sleeping(unless I sleep talk???)
-As I am praying...

Please add to the list!

  1. you should never say Hello (referring to the word Hello, in the language English) when speaking in a different language, for nobody would understand you

  2. Well, you could say hello in a lecture, as a greeting towards your lecture-attendees (or however you are supposed to call them; students, listeners, what?) for that is the proper, formal, and polite way to do so. It also depends if "Hello" is the same as "Hi," because, depending on your company, your salutations would vary.
Not only during a lecture, but perhaps when you are about to start watching a sex-ed video, you would say hi/hello to your fellow classmates and your teacher, unless you are quite specific that it is "during" the video, not before. But the teacher may say hello/hi to a late and/or incoming student, as may another fellow classmate.
Whereas saying hello during your sleep, sleep talking is classified as an isolated symptom, so unless you feel especially lonely, depressed, or deprived of company, saying hello while sleeping would be an inappropriate time (also, not to mention, you would be unconsciously saying that). Of course, if you sleep talk, it may lead to sleep walking, aka somnambulism, which could be dangerous if you start to drive, walk towards a window, or go outside.
When you are praying, you might say hello to Him if you are in a particularly happy, joyous, or bouncy mood.

    1. One correction: sleep talking (somniloquy), is a feature if sleep walking, but they are both classified as Parasomnias.

    3. Hannah, when I was referring to the Sex-Ed video and the lecture, I assumed that it would be interpreted as in the middle of such a thing... ♥☺☺♥☺☺♥☺☺♥☺☺

    4. Still, imagine a scenario with a student entering the classroom in the middle of a Sex-Ed video, late due to unknown reasons, and the teacher would have to greet the late student to class, wouldn't he/she?

  3. You shouldn't say hello when your brother is watching sportscenter.
You shouldn't say hello when your at gunpoint.

But as far as I'm concerned, saying hi isn't against the law, so you can say it whenever you'd like.
